Faststream are delighted to have partnered with a Southampton based shipping business to hire a Head of Risk,Safety and Compliance to join their team

Are you ready to steer the ship towards a safer, more compliant future? We have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced Head of Risk, Safety & Compliance to join our client's team on a permanent basis.

This pivotal role will place you at the heart of our client's operations department, where you will be instrumental in shaping and delivering our comprehensive safety and compliance strategy across all areas of our business.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Safety Culture Champion: Lead the charge in strengthening our safety culture, managing and facilitating the annual RSC workshops, and fostering engagement with a customer-centric approach.
  • Standards Implementation: Communicate and implement ISM and ISO standards, guiding all departments in maintaining the Red Funnel Quality, Risk, Safety, Environment, and Security Management System (IMS).
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to the Health & Safety Act 1974, COSHH, and all regulations pertaining to Ro/Ro ferries and Hi-Speed craft in categorized waters.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Maintain transparent and collaborative relationships with the MCA and our chosen classification society.
  • Designated Person Duties: Act as the pivotal link between ship and shore personnel, implementing an effective safety management system.
  • Safety Guidance: Provide expert guidance to safety officials both afloat and ashore, maintaining high safety awareness through accident and incident investigation and reporting.
  • Legislative Compliance: Manage and update the Business Risk Register, Internal & External Audit Program, Annual Business Objectives, Evaluation of Compliance, Asbestos Register, and Fire & First Aid Risk Assessments.
  • Health & Safety Training: Ensure relevant training is in place, including Manual Handling, Fire Awareness, Risk Awareness, COSHH, and Asbestos Register.
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct formal and informal safety inspections across all locations.
  • Emergency Response: Be an active member of the company’s Emergency Response Team.
  • GDPR Advisory: Provide expert advice on GDPR regulations.
What We’re Looking For:
  • Experienced Leader: At least 5 years in a senior safety leadership position, with evidence of improving safety culture within a similar-sized organization.
  • Qualified Professional: Certificate of competency and/or equivalent industry experience and recognized safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH Cert/Dip).
  • Standards Expert: ISM/ISO auditor, COSHH, and ISPS Company Security Officer or equivalent.
  • Management Pro: Experience in managing safety & compliance and quality control.
  • Adaptable Innovator: Ability to positively adapt to change, maintaining resilience and influencing our safety culture.
  • Ethical and Inclusive: Demonstrate social & economic responsibility by behaving ethically and inclusively, considering social and economic impact at all times.
  • Excellent Communicator: Superior communication skills across all mediums and to a range of audiences.
  • Customer-Centric: Embody and encourage a customer-centric and empathetic culture, promoting the health & wellbeing of our clients  internal & external customers.
  • Skilled Trainer: Demonstrable training skills across a range of delegates and topics.
  • Maritime Experience: Previous experience within the Maritime sector is desirable but not essential.
