Are you ready to play a key role in one of the UK’s busiest ports? We’re looking for a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Officer to oversee and coordinate vessel movements, ensuring safe navigation and protecting the marine environment in Kent.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Deck Officer in the Kent region to transition into their first shore-based role. Role Overview: As a VTS Officer, you’ll be at the forefront of managing vessel movements, allocating berths, and monitoring electronic surveillance systems withing a leading Port. You’ll work closely with marine, engineering, and operations teams, supporting both commercial and recreational vessels in a safety-critical, fast-paced setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and manage vessel traffic, including ferries, cargo, cruise ships, and recreational boats.
- Allocate berths and coordinate harbour patrols, towage services, and tug callouts.
- Operate and maintain surveillance equipment, monitor for pollution, and initiate emergency procedures as necessary.
- Participate in training, ensuring adherence to safety standards and maintaining VTS and MCA certifications.
Candidate Profile:
- Background in maritime operations, ideally as a Deck Officer with an Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate or above.
- Experience with ferry manoeuvring or ship handling is highly advantageous.
- Familiarity with radar operations and vessel traffic systems desirable.
- Knowledge of marine operations in busy ports or similar high-pressure environments (e.g., air traffic control).
- Willingness to work a rotating 12-hour shift pattern, including nights and weekends.
