Principal Marine Surveyor
Location: Durban, South Africa
Primary functions are to perform work in accordance with project specifications, monitor work and projects performed by subordinate surveyors while guiding the performance and development of direct subordinates; to plan and assign survey projects to staff members based on individual abilities; and to evaluate individual performance and communicate results to management.
This position holds responsibility for activities in the Port jurisdiction including the administration of office procedures under the direction of the District/Country Manager, Assistant Chief Surveyor or Regional Vice President, as appropriate and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
-Acts as a professional specialist for the organization in the application of related rules, regulations, requirements, concepts, principles and processes.
-Maintains active awareness of technical, business and management developments affecting present and potential customers and communicates this information promptly to the appropriate senior level managers.
-Maintains constant vigilance regarding pertinent activities of competitors (i.e., changes in business strategies, technical capabilities, marketing tactics, organization and management) operating in the port jurisdiction, especially other major classification societies, and communicates intelligence to the Country/District Manager, Assistant Chief Surveyor or Regional Vice President, as appropriate.
-Recommends short- and long-term manpower needs based on the projected business climate in order to insure that qualified, trained survey staff are available as needs arise.
-Assigns survey staff to projects based on their individual strengths and abilities.
-Appraises the performance and development potential of direct subordinates.
*Prepares annual performance appraisals.
*Evaluates and communicates individual performance appraisal issues with staff members under his/her direct supervision.
*Recommends compensation adjustments and advancements to Country/District Manager, Regional Vice President, or Assistant Chief Surveyor as appropriate.
*Identifies additional training needs and determines appropriate training programs for developing the full potential of surveying and other subordinate staff members.
-Plans, schedules and coordinates various phases of surveying work and monitoring the quality of service on work performed, including reviews of survey reports.
-Monitors work and projects performed by subordinate surveyors to ensure maintenance of quality, content, consistency and continuity of work performed.
-Provides supervision, guidance and training to lower level surveyors.
-Promotes the services and capabilities to present and potential customers.
-Directs the implementation and operation of the Quality System in assigned area of responsibility.
-Promotes participation, teamwork and the exercise of individual leadership among jurisdictional employees towards the continuous improvement of quality in aspects of the organization.
-May serve as Account Manager to designated customers and potential customers and actively promotes the services and capabilities of the company throughout the business community.
-Ability to develop a working knowledge of Classification Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, and related instructions, as well as the Employee Safety Policy.
-Ability to read engineering plans and have a basic understanding of shipbuilding practices and vessel operations.
-Ability to perform surveys in the prescribed format.
-Knowledge of computer programs or software packages related to job responsibilities.
-Knowledge of related technical interfaces required for group project work.
-Knowledge of ships' engineering systems and machinery.
-Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, pertinent information relative to assigned area of technical expertise.
-Ability to analyze problems and propose solutions.

-The management skills to organize, plan, and direct the work activities of other professional employees.
-The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.
-Working knowledge of the Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management Systems.
-Minimum three 3 years' experience working as a Senior Surveyor.
-An exceptional Comprehensive understanding of the company's strategic technical positioning in their respective sector of the marine industry
-International assignment or significant exposure to international processes, requirements, business issues and problem resolution.
-Possesses and demonstrates a mastery of the comprehensive body of knowledge in Survey operations.
-Qualifications from a tertiary institution within a relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum two (2) years program); or
-Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer, and
-Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of statutory certification and services and, before assignment, with their future work.
